Mr. Milam,
Here is the reply of our tree fruit specialist:
I looked through my books on apple varieties and I found 'Red Milam'. I never heard of this and the description of the variety simply says that it has some disease resistance. it can supposedly be purchased from the following nurseries:
Greenmantle Nursery, 3010 Ettersburg Rd., Garberville, CA 95440. Lawson's Nursery, Rt. 1, Box 473, Yellow Creek Rd., Ball Ground, GA 30107 Long Hungry Creek Nursery, Red Boiling Springs, TN 37150
I hope this helps!

It is yet to be proved either way, conclusively, in my opinion.
Remember that the records show that Samuel Mileham married Martha Gardner on September 8, 1724 in Christ Church Parish, Lancaster County, Virginia; in the Chesapeake Bay part of Virginia. John and Thomas are the only other Milams found in the Virginia records prior to the 1760s; no Archibald is found in the Virginia records in the 1700s or early 1800s.
Thomas is first found in Orange County, Virginia, on the western frontier, in 1737, just 13 years after Samuel married Martha Gardner on the coast. Thomas appears in court when a William Smith brought suit against Thomas for 400 pounds of tobacco. Thomas is clearly not a 13 year old child, and in fact appears to be a well established adult. In fact, by law a male could not appear in court, or conduct any form of business, if he was not of the age of 21 or more. Thus, this would place Thomas as born no later than 1716.
Though we don't find John until 1757 when he sold his interest in land
in Louisa County, which borders Culpeper County where Thomas was living
at this same time; Louisa and Culpeper counties were formed from Orange
County. As a Grace Mylam married Richard Cholmonldly in 1756
in Goochland County, which borders Louisa County, and as John Milam and
the Cholmonldlys settled in Halifax County as early as 1763, which borders
Bedford County where Thomas settles at the same time. The proven
children of John interact with Grace Cholmonldly frequently, thus indicating
that there is a close relationship with Grace. I believe that she was the
daughter of John. Even if she married at the young age of 16, should
would have been born in 1740, and even if John married at the young age
of 16 (which is unlikely) he would thus have been born in 1724.
Thus we can substantially state that John and Thomas were most likely
brothers because of their close and constant proximity to each other, and
that they were most likely not sons of Samuel Mileham because of
their being born prior to his marriage, and because they first appear
out on the distant frontier of Virginia, as opposed to close proximity
to Samuel. In fact, they are in closer proximity to where Joseph
Milam is said to have settled when he came to the western frontier of Virginia
from Boston, where in the will of his father who refers to "... my
son Joseph Maylem if he be alive and Ever Return to his Native Land ..."
Could John and Thomas be the son of this Joseph who left his father
under apparently bad terms and settled on the frontier of Virginia?
>As to Archibald Milam, we only find a record of the Archibald Milam

Joanne,
Didn't I send you the excerpt from Volume 6, # 4, the July-August 1993
issue of Milam Roots, in which I present my argument and proof on the parentage
of Jordan Milam. First my argument discusses how Samuel and
Jordan are continuously found as living in close proximity to each
other, first in Virginia and then in South Carolina where they migrated
to together, but the primary piece of evidence is the birth record found
of Jordan Milam in the famous Douglas Register; William Douglas was the
minister in Goochland County, Virginia. There Jordan is recorded
as born to Samuel Mylom and Sarah Kemp on February 28, 1764 and baptized
on July 29, 1764. The birth date is only two days off from the date
he reports in his pension, but it is too close to be coincedence, plus
he is the only Jordan Milam in the 1700s and early 1800s.
If I didn't send you this excerpt, let me know, and I will send it to you.

Hi everyone,
I have been trying to do some strategic, top down type of thinking
about what we know about the Boston Maylem/Milams. In other words
I am trying to "see the forest and the trees." Here are some thoughts
for consideration:
1. The prevailing opinion about the Boston Mylam/Mylom/Maylem/Milams, is that their line MAY have disappeared after only a couple of generations. I just don't believe this is possible.
My reasoning:
According to Vera Milam Ryker, John of Boston had 6 sons, and according
to info I received from Robert Wilbanks, dated October 1994, John had an
additional son, John Jr. One son, Benjamin, died young. That
leaves 5-6 sons! Of those, it is only Joseph and his descendants
that we know anything about (at least to my knowledge), and even that information
is very sparse and gets murky very soon. What about the other sons'
families? What are the chances that all of these other sons had no
male offspring, and thus, no Maylem/Milam descendants? Zero,
in my opinion. I say there is a better chance of winning the California
lottery and simultaneously being struck by lightning, than it is for the
other 4-5 sons of John of Boston to have had no
Maylem/Milam descendants. I suppose they all could have died
of the Plague or something, but I doubt it.
There is no doubt that we have virtually no genealogical information on them after the 2nd generation, and in that sense they do seem to "disappear," but just because they disappear from view in records, doesn't necessarily mean that they ACTUALLY disappeared. Also, let's not forget about the Civil War, and about the many courthouses and other public offices that were razed and records destroyed, especially in Virginia.
However, there is good evidence of John of Boston's son, Ebenezer, being in Baltimore, Maryland in 1675, and of John of Boston's grandson, Joseph Jr., being in Virginia in the early 1700's. You can see that at least some of the Boston Milam descendants embarked upon a southern migration. Like most American pioneers, they were probably enticed southward by the availability of land grants or other free or cheap land.
What about the other sons, or grandsons, of John of Boston? I'm talking about the ones we know nothing about, except that they were born/existed. Isn't it reasonable to assume that they also migrated, with their kinsmen, southward to Maryland, Virginia, or other colonies in the late 1600's or early 1700's? If they had stayed in the Boston area, wouldn't there surely be some record of them, since by this time Boston had become an organized "metropolis" where record keeping was plentiful.
So where did they go and who are their descendants? Well, we don't know the answers to these questions right now. But logic tells me that there has to be John of Boston descendants out there that we don't know about, or that have been misidentified or wrongly connected to other family trees. A good example of how this can happen, is what happened to Mike Milam's ancestors George and William. (Mike, I still wish you would tell that story to the group).
I wonder how much detailed, no nonsense, "blood, sweat, and tears" type
research has been actually done on the descendants of the Boston Maylem/Milams?
Most Milams struggle just to get their tree traced back to
John and Thomas of Virginia, much less to Boston in 1630's. So
the Boston Milams often get shorted I suspect. New data on the Boston
Maylem/Milams could really change what we "know" about Milams. Maybe
the data is there just waiting for someone to really look for it?
Anyone need a challenge?
Anybody else got any ideas? Thanks, Oliver Milam.
Hi Robert,
Thanks for taking the time to respond to a couple of our emails.
It is great to have your thoughts and help.
You touched on a couple of subjects that have intrigued me for some time and I would like to follow-up on them if you don't mind.
1. To support your theory that Archibald never existed, you say "no Archibald is found in the Virginia records in the 1700s or early 1800s." In Vera Milam Ryker's book, she states this about Archibald: ARCHIBALD MILAM, born 1729, lived with his family in Bedford County, Virginia and was probably still living when his son, Moses Scott Milam, married 18 October 1774, when the record in Bedford County said "Moses Milam, son of Archibald." What about this record?
2. To support your theory that Thomas of Virginia was born before 1716, and not 1727 as often thought, you say, "Thomas is first found in Orange County, Virginia, on the western frontier, in 1737, just 13 years after Samuel married Martha Gardner on the coast. Thus, this would place Thomas as born no later than 1716."
My thoughts:
Isn't it possible that this Thomas is not Thomas of Virginia, son of
Samuel Mileham/Milam, but the Thomas Milum, that Judge W.E. Bohannon, in
1927 at age 80, said was his ancestor and that this Thomas Milum received
a land grant from Lord Fairfax, dated 31 January 1749? This land
grant was in what was formerly Orange County, Virginia. And although
it has never been proved or disproved, or even asserted, to my knowledge,
isn't it possible for this Thomas to be a son of John of Boston's grandson,
Joseph, Jr., who was in the exact same area much earlier? It seems
to me that it is very likely that a commingling of Boston Maylem/Milam
descendants and Samuel Mileham/Milam descendants occurs in Virginia about
this time. At the very least, I don't think it can be said with certainty
that it didn't happen.
Thanks for any insights you can give, Oliver Milam.

Hi cousins,
I just got off the phone with Jim Milum, a long time Milum/Milam researcher,
and currently an Arkansas State Representative. He wrote a book on
his Milum/Milams in 1980. He descends from Jordan Milam. I
thought I'd pass along some things we talked about.
He and his wife recently made a trip to Norfolk County, England and
visited the remains of Mileham Castle, talked to the owners of the land
who gave them "the big key" to St. John the Baptist Church so they could
visit it at their leisure. Some of the old Milehams are buried in
the floor of the church! Jim said everything that we had previously
heard about was actually there. So if you were like me, a little
skeptical of the "olde English information" we have on Mileham/Milams,
apparently there is no need to be. According to Jim, it is
all as previously reported. I asked him if he discovered any
major new information while there, and he said he did not.
To refresh your memories, Mileham/Milam ancestors came into England with William the Conqueror in 1066, from Normandy. Land was granted to these ancestors in the area where the castle/town stands today. In 1377, there are records of George de Mileham and his brother William on the land. Jim mentioned that there is some evidence that the Norman/Mileham ancestors are connected to the Jewish people of North Africa. I recently did a people search, and there are many Milehams in England today.
Jim also visited Hickman County, Tennessee recently, and found Jordan
Milam's cabin still standing on the land he had received as bounty for
his Revolutionary War and War of 1812 service. He said he hoped to
move it to
Arkansas.
Take care, Oliver.

GO TO THE LETTER ROBERT IS

I have a copy of the marriage record of Moses Milam to Miss Boyd on
October 18, 1774, and nowhere on the record is there mentioned an Archibald
Milam. Though it is possible that I may have missed
something, I feel that my research of Virginia records has been very
thorough over the last 20 years, and I assure you that there are no Virginia
records in the 1700s and early 1800s which mention an Archibald
Milam.
The book by Vera Milam Ryker was actually put together by her daughter
and was based upon the old notes that Mrs. Ryker still had at that time.
Those notes were based upon the old tradition that most Milam researchers
have stubbornly lived by. Many Milam researchers are resistant to
my new findings, and yet are also resistant to searching for original documentation.
They still cling to the old heresay that has been passed on to us which
the older Milam researchers are still passing around. We must discontinue
basing our research upon the
undocumented research of the early Milam researchers of the turn of
the century and the 1930s. We are not going to find birth, marriage
and death records to help us with our research, so we must use other forms
of records for our continuing research.
The land grant of 1749 was for the land on Doubletop Mountain, near
what would become Milam's Gap; I have an abstract of this grant.
In 1737, when Thomas appears in court, he was most likely living on this
piece of
land on Doubletop Mountain in Orange County, Virginia. Thomas
Milam never left Doubletop Mountain until he sold it and migrated to Bedford
County in 1763. At the time that he sold it, it was in Culpeper County.
Today it is in Madison and Page Counties. Remember that Rush Milam,
a proven son of Thomas, states in his pension that he was born in Culpeper
County and migrated with his father to Bedford County in 1763, thus establishing
that the Thomas in Bedford County is the same Thomas who disappears from
Culpeper County in 1763.
Yes, it is my belief that Thomas and John were most likely sons of Joseph
Milam Jr. of Boston who is believed to have settled on the western frontier
of Virginia. But I have not found any documents proving that Joseph
was in Virginia, that is why I don't consider it proven. I don't
believe that Thomas and John had any connection with
Samuel in Lancaster County; but I'm not stating that as proof.

They are in Nathaniel Hunt's District.
Bartlett, Benjamin and Thomas are all next door to each other in James

In general, use MILAM-L@rootsweb.com for everything else. This

Hopefully, that will facilitate more discussion, more sharing of data
and help, keep everyone informed, and keep things around here interesting.
Take care, and good hunting, Oliver Milam
Hi Robert,
Thanks again for taking the time to discuss your thoughts and theories
with us. The main reason this Milam group was created was to facilitate
this type of discussion. I hope we will see much more of it soon,
on a myriad of subjects and with a greater number of participants.
For one thing, it enables us to flesh out old, and new ideas, and create a better understanding of where we are, how we got there, and where we should be headed with Milam genealogy. And as they say, "Two heads are better than one." How about 70? This group could undoubtedly advance the current state of Milam genealogy dramatically. As individual participation grows, I am confident that we will get there.
Thanks again for providing a stimulous to group discussion. Being able to discuss Milams with someone as knowledgeable as you is very worthwhile and very helpful.
Discussion:
In your last email you stated: "The book by Vera Milam Ryker was actually
put together by her daughter and was based upon the old notes that Mrs.
Ryker still had at that time. Those notes were based upon the old
tradition that most Milam researchers have stubbornly lived by. Many
Milam researchers are resistant to my new findings, and yet are also resistant
to searching for original documentation. They still cling to the
old heresay that has been passed on to us which the older Milam researchers
are still passing around. We must discontinue basing our research
upon the undocumented research of the early Milam researchers of the turn
of the century and the 1930s."
I know that you are not implying that Vera Milam's Ryker's book is "undocumented
research" or that it is based upon flimsy "old hearsay" or "old tradition."
I am sure you value her work highly, as do I, because I believe I
have seen her work used verbatim in the draft chapters of your book
that you sent me a couple of years ago. If there is one thing that
has come through loud and clear to me since I first started researching
my Milams, it is that Vera's book is the most accurate and best documented
available, bar none. After all, she was a highly educated woman.
Besides having a personality that required organization and precision,
she knew about and adhered to the formalities of footnoting and documenting
research.
In addition, because her Milams and my Milams coincide a great deal,
while doing my own research, I have encountered many people who knew her,
knew of her research, and knew of her obsession with "getting it right."
I have talked to the people who put her book together, a professional researcher
that she hired, as well as other relatives and other Milam researchers
who knew her and the quality of her work. The overwhelming consensus
of opinion is that she took great, great pains to make sure nothing was
asserted in her book that
was not documented. She spent 20 years and $20,000-$30,000 (1960's
$) on her research. Her son told me, in a regretful tone, "She cared
more about the dead than she did about the living; she was obsessed with
it."
Am I saying that it is error free? Absolutely not. No one
can write a book on genealogy and not have errors. After all, I have
detected errors in her work regarding my family, and I have seen them repeated
verbatim in your work. My efforts here are just to set the record
straight. After all, she can't speak for herself. I don't want
there to be any confusion that her book wasn't in fact Vera's work.
She dedicated too much time and effort at it to
let that slide.
When I talked to her niece, the person who typed up the book, I think
I "grilled" her pretty well about how she transcribed Vera's material into
the book. She said "it was easy, I just typed it." Vera
had already handwritten
just about everything that was going into her book. No "interpretation"
had to be done.
Personally, I am very grateful that her work has been preserved by her family. It would be a great tragedy if her research and work were lost. A very, great tragedy. For me, finding her book was like finding a great treasure. It lays out my Milams all the way back through Coleman Milam to John of Virginia. Because of her, I not only know 9 generations of my Milams, but have pictures and family stories about them. She has enabled me to become "familiar" with my Milam ancestors. Her book is a must for anyone researching this line. Because of my fervor for her book, some might think I have a monetary interest in it. I do not. My only interest is seeing Vera Milam Ryker get the credit she justly deserves. Take care, Oliver Milam.

Mileham, Norfolk County, England
Mileham is situated on the watershed between the rivers and tributaries of the Great Ouse in the west and those flowing towards the eastern coast. This strategic point was occupied by the Romans, and some of the many artifacts found, such as a 60 ounce silver dish, are on display at the British Museum. Above high earthworks there are the remains of a Norman castle. The church, with parts dating back to the 12th century, has beautiful windows with pictures of saints and benefactors. The chancel is the burial place of the famous diarist`s cousin, Fermor Pepys (1660). There is a small brass to Christopher Crowe of 1523, an ancestor of Lord Nelson`s.

Hi Robert,
As always, thanks for taking the time to discuss your ideas and knowledge
of Milams.
Point of discussion #1:
In your last email you state: "I have a copy of the marriage record
of Moses Milam to Miss Boyd on October 18, 1774, and nowhere on the record
is there mentioned an Archibald Milam. Though it is possible that
I may have missed something, I feel that my research of Virginia records
has been very thorough over the last 20 years, and I assure you that there
are no Virginia records in the 1700s and early 1800s which mention an Archibald
Milam."
My thoughts: That sure seems to put that issue to bed. That marriage
record is the only place I had heard that Archibald had been mentioned.
Since it isn't there, then there is no basis, that I know of, to refute
your argument
that Archibald did not exist. I'll go along with you on it, for
now.
Point of discussion #2 :
Last time you stated: "Thomas Milam never left Doubletop Mountain until
he sold it and migrated to Bedford County in 1763. At the time that
he sold it, it was in Culpeper County. Today it is in Madison and
Page Counties. Remember that Rush Milam, a proven son of Thomas,
states in his pension that he was born in Culpeper County and migrated
with his father to Bedford County in 1763, thus establishing that the Thomas
in Bedford County is the same Thomas who disappears from Culpeper County
in 1763."
My thoughts: That clarifies your position superbly, and it is based on sound data and reasoning. I'll go along with you on this one too.
Point of discussion #3:
At this point, we are in a subject area where you can do us all a lot
of good if you will give us the benefit of your Milam knowledge once more.
How did the information originate that Samuel came from England, and that
he had sons John, Thomas, and Archibald? Did someone just pull that
out of thin air? Also the dates of birth for them?
I talked to Mary Sturgeon several months ago about her book on Milams, and at the time she was pretty adamant about Samuel coming from England into Virginia. Yesterday, when I talked to her again, she was less so. She mentioned that you had discussed this subject with her also. I have not read her book, but she is sending a copy to the local library for me to peruse. Since I caught her by surprise when I called, she was working from an unrefreshed memory. She said she thinks she got most of her info on Samuel from "a lady in Texas."
I have a feeling that this may have been Maud Holston Lawson, of Houston, who continued the research started by her sister, Rose Holston Pope, when she died without publishing it. Rose had been on a Milam research committee in the early 1900's, along with, Herbert M. Milam of Atlanta, Marcus A. Milam of Miami, (all decendants of Barlett Milam) and Wiley Glen Milam (descendant of Thomas and Elizabeth Talbert).
This must be the group of researchers who you were referring to when you said, "We must discontinue basing our research upon the undocumented research of the early Milam researchers of the turn of the century and the 1930s."
Is this where the theory of Samuel coming from England originated? If so, do you know their reasoning or documentation? Is it totally bogus? Obviously, the truth of whether Samuel came from England is a pivotal piece of information to Milam genealogy. Help us understand what is known about it.
Thanks again for taking the time to discuss this and for all your help,
Oliver Milam.

You missed my point. I was ABSOLUTELY IN NO WAY implying that
Vera Ryker's work was of poor
quality or undocumented, or that she was an unskilled researcher and
organizer. Her book is very good, as well as a number of other books
on the Milam family that are out there. Vera's book is well documented
from Coleman Milam down to the present generations.
I was merely indicating that, like all the other current Milam works
and researchers, she relied solely upon the heresay and guesses made by
the earlier Milam researchers when it came to the very earliest Milam generations.
My previous discussion was that we must try to begin anew in regard to
the research of the earlier Milam generations and look for documentation
regarding these earlier generations. During this research
process we must try not to use these earlier beliefs. I'm sure
that Vera understood and believed this also; we had corresponded regularly
before her death. When she typed the book, her niece only used Vera's
notes, and probably did not know about Vera's actual feelings and
beliefs.
I am trying to point out that it was only by ignoring the old belief in the three brothers of John, Thomas and Archibald, and by a very earnest attempt to find the documentation on each of them by diligently researching the early Virginia records was I able to make some of the most substantial discoveries regarding the Milams in Virginia in the last several years; such as disproving that Archibald ever existed, finding Jordan's birth record and proving his parents, discovering Thomas' most probable date of birth, etc. Mike Milam, of California, was also able to make a substantial discovery through his diligent research of the actual documents: now proving that John had a son William who in turn was the true father of the George Milam of Indiana; as reported in the last issue of the Milam Roots newsletter.
Vera and I agreed together that her link as to Coleman being the son of Thomas was flimsy, and we worked togther to try to strengthen it. It is only because of my research of all of the Milams of that time period, combined with process of elimination, circumstantial evidence, apparent relationships and other indirect evidence can we state the high probability that Coleman was the son of Thomas.
Please try to understand what I am saying. I am not trying to downplay or degrade anyone or anyone else's research efforts. I am merely trying to create an effort for all Milam researchers to take the time to uncover the truth with their own original research effort, and not continue to redistribute the old and false notes of the earlier Milam researchers, or depend upon old traditions, heresay, guesses and other forms of undocumented information.

Hi Robert,
Thanks for sharing your Milam knowledge with us once more.
I agree totally with your point that we need to verify and document everything regarding the genealogy of our ancestors. In fact, that was exactly the point of my "Brainstorming Boston Milams" email a few days ago. And as I have said before, and you mentioned last time, Mike Milam's experience with his ancestors George and William is just the latest example of why we have to rethink the assumptions and theories, and keep trying to verify everything.
I have come to realize that genealogical research is an evolutionary process for most of us. The first stage is to find out what is ALREADY "known" about your ancestors. In other words, find out what has already been ocumented and what the concensus of expert opinion is regarding your ancestors.
The second stage is probably to RETHINK the opinions, theories, and assumptions made by the experts regarding controversial areas, and to attempt to find and document the "real" answers. The third stage is probably when you find some new answers, which lead you to start espousing your own NEW opinions, theories and assumptions. There may be more stages, I don't know.
I think I am entering the second stage, and that is why I jump at the chance to discuss it all with you. Discussing the areas of uncertainty and controversy with an expert like you, enables me, and the others here, to understand how the theories were formulated and what they were based on. Hopefully, this will bring new minds and fresh ideas into the arena. The result of this rethinking may be total agreement with the old opinions or a discovery of new areas needing focus and research.
Additionally, discussing them here, where all the group can observe
it, and join in if they wish, has the potential of tremendously advancing
the overall level of understanding of Milam genealogy. That is my
goal, and I know it is yours also. With your continued help and availability
for discussion with us here, I know it will be advanced even further.
Take care, Oliver.

Hi Kathy,
There sure is. The Bedford Genealogical Society
has been compiling a LARGE cemeteries index as they can can find them for
over 4 years now. The Records of Death are in the Courthouse also
but I'm not sure of the years.

Chuck,
I've been monitoring the Milam list in hopes of finding someone from
this line. Before I begin, I would like to tell you a little story to explain
my interest in the line of Pettis Milam.
My mother was born Aug 10 1939 in Pleasant Hill MO. She was named Bonna
Jean Milam. My grandmother, Minnie Marie Markham, married Earl Clifton
Milam, (marriage date not found). Earl was the son of Fred Chastain
Milam and Claudia Johnson. Fred was the son of Milton who was son of Pettis.
Anyway, that's how the line goes and I'll provide more details later.
My mother was told on her wedding day by an elder sister that Earl Milam
was not her real father. This haunted my mother for years, although she
never remembered meeting Earl Milam. When I began researching my mothers
tree, this story was revealed to me and I had a hard time getting anyone
to talk about anything. Further into my research, I discovered that Earl
and my grandmother
had divorced in 1936, which was 3 yrs prior to my mother's birth. This
gave a little more weight to the above rumor. After much checking around
and prodding to my aunts, the real story was revealed and it was discovered
that Earl Clifton Milam was not my mother's birth father. My grandmother
had named her Milam to protect her from knowing that she was an illigimate
child. The story had a good ending, however, we did find the family of
my mother's real birth father and after 58 years, my mother met her 1/2
brothers and sisters for the first time and they have a healthy and close
relationship today. My grandmother died in 1957, just after my mother married,
so she never had the chance to ask her mother about any of this.
Anyway, I had done quite a bit of work on this Milam line and I am still
interested in learning more. I am not a Milam descendant, but my aunts
are and
I would like to continue this research for their benefit. This
line seems to be hung up on Pettis Milam. In a book titled, "Personal Histories
of Bedford Co", there is a biography on Pettis which follows:
>P.C. MILAM, pg 29
owner of a fine farm on Batter Creek, on which he has lived for many
years, was born in Bedford Co, June 24 1808. In this county, February 8,
1838, he married Jemina Milliam, who was born here on the 15th of october
1820. They had nine children: Benjamin Kelley, born March 28, 1840; Sally
H, July 14, 1842; Palestine W, August 7 1844, died in 1864; William H,
June 7 1847; James M, November 26, 1849; Mary E, July 25, 1852; Lucy N,
January 5 1855; Charles Spurgeon, April 8, 1858; Susan B, December 19,
1960. The three oldest sons were soldiers of Virginia through the war between
the states, and the second son, Palestine W, was taken prisoner at Westminister,
Maryland, and held at Fort Delaware, until he died. One of the other sons
lives in Missouri, the oldest daughter lives in Montgomery Co and the others
are in Bedford County. Benjamin K and Eliza Milam were the parents
of Mrs Millam. Her father was born in Bedford county and died February
10, 1845; her mother, born in Fauquier County, Virginia, died July 13,
1877. Mary Milliam, mother of P.C., died May
13, 1865. His parents were natives of Bedford County. One of the sons
of PC Millam, William H, is now conducting his estate, and the postoffice
address of the family is Big Island, Bedford County, Virginia.
Now this is the ony thing that I have found that comes close to identifiying the parents of Pettis, naming his mother as Mary and saying that both parents were natives of Bedford Co VA. It is unknown who the father was. Jemina's parents are named and there is some information available on them, but this was not the line I was interested in, nor does it connect to you, as this was the second marriage for Pettis.
As you stated in your letter, Pettis married first, Sarah "Sally" Wilkerson
on Nov 15, 1832 in Bedford Co. The Wilkerson line connects with the Markham
line of my grandmother, named above, so I have done some research on this
line. Sarah "Sally" Wilkerson was born abt 1810, probably in Bedford
Co and died
1835-1837. She was the daughter of John Wilkerson (1787-1822) and Elizabeth
"Betsy" Worley b 1790, who married in Bedford Co on Jan 8 1811. They had
two children: Sarah and Eliza. Eliza was born abt 1814 and married Jesse
Coleman, Nov 5, 1830 in Bedford Co. Jesse and Eliza had 11 children: 6
sons and 5 daughters. I have additional information on their line if and
when you are ready for it. Elizabeth "Betsy" Worley Wilkerson remarried
to David Burks on Oct 31, 1822 in Bedford Co.after the death of John
I do not have any additional information on her.
John Wilkerson was the son of Parson Wilkerson and Anna Butler, who
married in Bedford Co on Aug 31, 1785. Parson was born 1765-67 and died
May 1837 in Bedford Co. They were the parents of 12 children of which I
have descendant information on. 5 daughters and 7 sons: (1) Nicholas
Wilkerson, Sr (1785-1871) m Malinda DeWitt, Jan 11 1803 in Bedford,
they had 3 sons and 3 daughters. He later married Mildred J Preston,

2 sons, 2 daughters

(son of Owen Wilkerson, Sr and Sarah Markham) on Oct 27 1834 in Bedford,
1 son, 4 daughters
Parson Wilkerson was the son of Joseph Wilkerson and Mary Franklin.
Joseph was born in Powhaten Co, VA on May 12, 1729 and died in Bedford
Co on Mar 15 1829. Mary and Joseph had 4 children, 3 sons and 1 daughter.
Their daughter, Penelope "Nelly" Wilkerson was my ggggg grandmother. Joseph
remarried to Rhoda
Lockett on December 29, 1808 in Bedford Co and they had one son. I
do not have any additional information on the parents of Joseph's wives.
(1) John Wilkerson (1755-1824) m Susanna Johnson, Dec 16 1792 in Bedford,
4 daughters

Joseph was the son of Nicholas Wilkenson who died in Powhaten Co VA

This is all that I have on the Milam line. I would truly love to have
any details that you can add. I'm sure this is much more information that
you bargained for on the Wilkerson and Wheat lines, but I thought that
you would
like to have it. Let me know if I can help you in any other way. I
began working on this line early in my genealogy hobby and was negligent
in recording my sources. I had made contact with several others who had
given me
this info but I did not record their names. There is someone who belongs
to the Bedford Co VA mailing list who is researching the Wheat and Chastain
lines. A post to this list may lead you to them: VABEDFOR-L@rootsweb.com
